Built for CRO, CFO, Board

What is NRR?

Net revenue retention (NRR) measures how much recurring revenue you retain and expand from an existing customer cohort over a period, after churn and contraction. It answers whether the installed base is growing on its own.

Formula

NRR = (Beginning revenue - churn - contraction + expansion) / Beginning revenue * 100

Version v1. See methodology and the public formula repo for sources and change history.

Worked example

Using the default example inputs (Beginning recurring revenue: $100,000; Churned revenue: $8,000; Contraction revenue: $5,000; Expansion revenue: $18,000), NRR equals 105% (Net revenue retention). NRR shows whether expansion offsets churn and contraction.

What good looks like

Best-in-class B2B SaaS often cites NRR above 100% at scale. Early-stage companies may be lower; trend and cohort mix matter more than a single headline number.

Directional guidance only, not a cohort benchmark claim. Premium cohort bands appear when sample thresholds are met for your profile.

Read the NRR benchmark guide for methodology, cohort percentiles, and how participant bands differ from public guidance.

FAQ

What is NRR?
Net revenue retention (NRR) measures how much recurring revenue you retain and expand from an existing customer cohort over a period, after churn and contraction. It answers whether the installed base is growing on its own.
What is the NRR formula?
NRR = (Beginning revenue - churn - contraction + expansion) / Beginning revenue * 100
NRR vs GRR?
GRR excludes expansion; it is the retention floor. NRR adds expansion back in and is the headline growth-from-base metric.
Revenue vs logo NRR?
This calculator uses revenue dollars. Logo retention is a separate lens; use the churn calculator for logo and revenue churn together.
What period should NRR cover?
Trailing twelve months is common for board reporting; quarterly NRR helps operators spot inflection faster.
